Map: Ruess's Last Days
Since 1934, when 20-year-old Everett Ruess left Escalante, Utah (1), and vanished into the wilderness, searchers have concentrated their efforts on Davis Gulch (2), where two burros were reportedly discovered four months after Ruess disappeared. But more than 75 years later, a Navajo legend and a mysterious gravesite may place the young explorer 60 miles to the east, along Comb Ridge (3). A forensic analysis of the bones found on the Comb indicates that the deceased was an Anglo, about 20 years old, and five feet eight inches tall—all of which fits the description of Everett Ruess.
