Close Calls on Assignment
ADVENTURE contributing photographer Corey Rich reveals how life in the field is never predictable. Here he recalls an expedition to Irian Jaya, Indonesia, with legendary snowboard-mountaineer Stephen Koch. Koch was attempting to be the first person to snowboard the Seven Summits. To get to 16,023-foot Carstensz Pyramid, Oceania's highest point, the expedition team had to travel from sea level to jungle to alpine terrain, and, finally, up a glacier to the peak. As Rich points out, field photography requires flexibility, quick thinking, and a sense of adventure.
