Ocean Lifeguard, Australia

Checking the surf conditions is a pretty important part of being an ocean lifeguard. This is my friend and partner for the day, "Mumbles," testing out the surf before work.

Whitewater Paddler
Photograph by Harry Berking, My Shot
Though it may seem a desperate and chaotic pursuit for the foolhardy, many paddlers are drawn to the zen-like focus and powerful grace of paddling whitewater.

High Water, Zion National Park
Photograph by Casey McCallister, My Shot
The Narrows in Zion National Park had a particularly high water level in early November. In some sections, our packs had to be carried over our heads to keep them from getting wet. The 40-degree water also kept things interesting.

Sailing in Ammassalik, Greenland
Photograph by Haukur Sigurdsson, My Shot
This is Aurora, a 60-foot sailing boat operated by the Icelandic company Borea Adventures. During August and September she was in the Ammassalik area in east Greenland exploring the remote fjords and the little villages of this giant country-an unforgettable adventure for anyone that comes along.

Breaking Wave Surfer
Photograph by Mark Tipple, My Shot
Sam Marschall pops out in front of a breaking wave, having surfed the wave underwater. The power of the wave underwater can be strong enough to pull a bodysurfer along and push them out into the "flats" as the wave reaches its breaking point. Sam managed to time his push just as the wave was about to crash onto the shore, sending him out into the flat water.

Mont Blanc Summit, Europe
Photograph by Fredrik Schenholm, My Shot
I captured this image of my good friend Tomas Olsson on the way down from the summit of West Europe's highest mountain, Mont Blanc. A year later I joined him to climb Mount Everest. Tomas's goal was to ski down a route along the steep north side of the mountain. He summited, but on the way down, on one of the last cruxes, an anchor broke and he fell to his death. This is my portrait of a good friend walking towards heaven.

Mount Beauty Biker, Australia
Photograph by Dan Peters, My Shot
This image was shot after a dewy morning in the hills of Mount Beauty, Victoria, Australia. Red Bull had set up this amazing dirt half-pipe for BMX competitions and I was lucky enough to be invited to a weekend where 26-inch wheels were allowed on the course. Not many lads wanted to jump this due to the morning damp, but Alan Hepburn decided to give it everything for the shot. The light, the backdrop, the trick, all made for one of my favorite MTB shots ever.

Skier on Lolo Pass, Montana
Photograph by Eric Mullen, My Shot
Skier Brian French goes big in the Bitterroot Mountains of Montana. A big snowstorm put down two feet of fresh snow, making for perfect conditions up at Lolo Pass along the Montana-Idaho border.

Paragliding in Anzere, Switzerland
Photograph by Peter Stanley, My Shot
A paraglider flies over Anzere, Switzerland. He launched from the ski slopes, and I waited for him to turn into an area that was dark with forest below, which allowed the sunlight to have more of an effect on the chute and lines.

Igor Corko, a leading Croatian alpinist, free climbs the 350-meter-long alpine route Vint Ani Do. The route is located on Meisules dla Biesces in the Dolomites, Italy. On the difficult parts, the route is equipped with pegs; a set of friends is recommended.

Biker in Hilton, South Africa
Photograph by Guy Anderson, My Shot
The town of Hilton in South Africa is known for its misty weather, which came out in full force for an annual mountain bike classic. The unusually wet winter day challenged competitors with muddy tracks, low visibility, and an icy wind. I battled to just keep my camera dry, and after failing to obtain sharp images through the haze I took a step back and framed this shot, which captures the adventurous rider tackling the harsh environment.

Backcountry Skiers
Photograph by Victor Troyanov, My Shot
It's been the most snowless winter ever. But our desire for skiing has never been stronger. We discovered remote backcountry terrains and reached new horizons. We descended slopes we've never dared to try before. Most of our backcountry experience consisted of hours of exhausting climbing and only minute-long rides. It was worth it.

Climber on Romsdalshorn, Norway
Photograph by Fredrik Schenholm, My Shot
Tormod Granheim makes the first abseil from the summit on Romsdalshorn, Norway. A magic moment in the mountain. After a long day in the clouds, the sun finally found its way through the layers. But only for five minutes. The time was 11:15 p.m. and the sun hardly made it under the horizon before it was time to go up again.

Snowshoeing in Colorado
Photograph by Phil Moise, My Shot
During an annual ski trip to Vail, Colorado, in February 2011 it snowed almost four feet in a week. We had scheduled a snowshoeing trip without realizing how deep the snow would be. This is a picture of my son Walter and our guide struggling through the new snow.

Biking in the Italian Alps
Photograph by Tomas Kouba, My Shot
A biker tackles the Colle del Sommelier mountain pass near Bardonecchia in the Italian Alps. Cars are only allowed on the road three days a week, so it's perfect for mountain bikes during the other days. There are magnificent views on the long downhill ride back to Bardonecchia.
