West Coast Trail, Canada
Photograph by Karin Eibenberger, My Shot
The West Coast Trail on Vancouver Island is one of the most remarkable trails in North America. The 47-mile-long (75-kilometer-long) trail was built as a rescue path for stranded sailors. The picture was taken with a Canon EOS 5D Mark III and a 24-70 f/2.8 lens at Owen Point on the first day of the seven-day hike—and the point can only be passed if tides are below a certain level; otherwise, the inland trail has to be taken.

Pacaya Volcano, Guatemala
Photograph by Kara Cronin, My Shot
This image was taken during a trek at Pacaya Volcano in Guatemala. As I was hiking, members of my group were ahead of me, overlooking the beautiful site of the massive volcano. The image shows the four friends in awe of the view, the dark volcano in the distance and the little bit of light left just before nightfall. The fog sets the mood of this amazing landscape in Guatemala.

Vermilion Cliffs National Monument
Photograph by Tanmay Mahapatra, My Shot
The Wave is located on the Colorado Plateau, near the Utah and Arizona border in the U.S. The area is a gallery of gruesomely twisted sandstone resembling deformed pillars, cones, mushrooms, and other odd creations. Deposits of iron claim some of the responsibility for the unique blending of color twisted in the rock, creating a dramatic rainbow of pastel yellows, pinks, and reds. The Wave can be reached by moderate to strenuous hiking of an approximately three-mile one-way from Wire Pass Trailhead.

Pu'u Manamana, Hawaii

Nate Rubio hiking on the narrow ridge to the actual peak of Pu'u Manamana on the island of Oahu in Hawaii. Considered one of the most dangerous hikes on Oahu, Pu'u Manamana tests one's physical and mental abilities. The hike traverses over crumbly and unstable rock, undulating along very steep and narrow ridges with huge drops-offs on either side.

West Coast Trail, Canada

We awoke to gorgeous weather on day four of our trip this June hiking the West Coast Trail in the Pacific Rim National Park Reserve in British Columbia, Canada. As I lingered to take it all in, I snapped this photo of my friend Mark carefully making his way onward atop this rock bridge with the majestic Pacific Ocean to his left and a mirror-still intertidal pond to his right.

The north face of the Tre Cime di Lavaredo (the three peaks of Lavaredo). One of the best known mountain groups in the Alps and the main attraction in the Sexten Dolomites of northeastern Italy. The Cima Grande has an elevation of 2,999 meters and stands between the Cima Piccola at 2,857 meters and the Cima Ovest at 2,973 meters. The surrounding walking trails offer beautiful hikes.

Garhwal Himalaya
Photograph by Dipanjan Mitra, My Shot
Hiking in the Garhwal Himalaya to a place called Tapovan, I was enchanted by the beauty of the Himalaya throughout the route. At times it even involved life-and-death situations, at times flat rock studded trails. On my downward journey from Tapovan this moment suddenly caught my eyes. A fellow hiker who was about to turn the corner seemed as if he was being gulped by the huge rock.

Grand Canyon, Arizona

On the eve before our 26-mile, rim-to-rim hike we paused to take in the vast expanse that was going to become our next day. The hike was spectacular, not only for the physical beauty of the canyon itself but for the man-made feat of the trails that carry one into and out of it. Our national parks are treasures for the whole world to enjoy.

We left Chhukung and began hiking to Kongma La Pass in the cold morning air of the Himalaya. The sun rose to the east behind us, warming our backs as we were treated to amazing views of Ama Dablam and Amphu Gyabjen.

Mount Rainier National Park, Washington
Photograph by David Whelan, My Shot
I took this picture in Washington's Mount Rainier National Park. My wife and I were on a winter mountaineering trip, with the goal of summiting. However, the unfavorable weather and huge base of snow meant the avalanche risk was too high to try. Lucky for us, we had plenty of time to enjoy the amazing scenery. I took this picture at an elevation of about 6,500 feet (9,181 meters), on the way back to Paradise Inn. The Tatoosh Range rises in the distance.

This photo was taken midday in southern Utah's Zion National Park. I was hiking through the Narrows, which is a water trail, when I decided to snap this shot of my sister. The lighting in this photo is amazing—everything happened exactly at the right moment in time.
