This October, we finished the Annapurna Circuit trekking in Nepal. This picture was taken when we climbed the Throng La Pass (5,416 meters). At that time, with respect, my friend looked up at the snow mountain. His figure seemed so tiny in comparison with the great nature. I was quite impressed and took this picture.

Exploring the sandstone slot canyons of central Utah. This one was so deep and narrow, the sun could barely penetrate to the bottom and we needed headlamps to be able to see. It's narrower than your feet at the bottom of the slot, so you have to climb up higher and wedge yourself in place by friction. Climb too high though, and it widens out enough that it's hard to hold yourself in place, and you slide down—with a cheese-grater effect on your skin.

Conditions on Mount Rainier, Washington, turned unexpectedly deadly when a predicted storm blew in several hours early. Our climbing party struggled in the face of mounting whiteout and gale-force winds and subzero temperatures before abandoning our goal in favor of a safe return to Paradise (Longmire). Visibility dropped to about 15 feet and fresh snow was quickly covering the boot tracks up, so we navigated out by GPS.

Unknown climber traversing the crux of the Kain/South Ridge Route of Bugaboo Spire in Bugaboo Glacier Provincial Park (British Columbia, Canada). Behind him looms Snowpatch Spire. My climbing partner and I had climbed the same section hours ago in ascending and were then already on our descent. I was midway through rappelling down when I yelled up, "Hold on! I'm stopping to take a photo!"

I captured these adventurers after a warm and toasty ride up to the Aiguille du Midi (in the French Alps) on the Téléphérique up to 3,842 meters. I was short on breath just walking around on the platforms of the station (the buildings are like something out of a James Bond film, perched on the edge of a gut-wrenching void), and these guys had climbed up!

This is my friend Rodolfo climbing the final few meters to arrive at the 17,000-foot summit of Iztaccihuatl, Mexico's third highest peak. Behind him is the Ayoloco Glacier, one of the mountain's two active glaciers. In the distance is Popocatepetl, a higher, active volcano.

We were climbing Iztaccihuatl volcano in Mexico. It was raining and suddenly the sun came out and the clouds were rising from the valley.
