  • Photo: Raft in the Grand Canyon

    Grand Canyon, Arizona

Photograph by Rick Knight, My Shot

This photo was taken in the Grand Canyon in July 2001. Our group included three rafts and three kayaks, and we were on the river for 18 days. What an incredible place to pump adrenaline!

    Adriatic Sea, Croatia

Photograph by Luka Tambaca, My Shot

Croatia is one of the world's most interesting destinations for sea kayaking. This photo was taken on the coast of the Adriatic Sea.

  • Photo: Kayaking through a chamber

    Devil's Island

Photograph by Thomas Reich, My Shot

The wave coming into the chamber where I was sitting in my kayak ended up bouncing off the back wall and completely inundating me. Bad planning on my part.

  • Photo: Raft on Kern river in Sequoia National Forest

    Kern River, Sequoia National Forest

Photograph by Sean Naugle, My Shot

This shot was taken with a waterproof point-and-shoot camera this summer during a class-five whitewater rafting trip down the forks of the Kern River in California's Sequoia National Forest. Dave Osada paddles solo down the 22-mile stretch of river that features nine class-five rapids that give a person the thrill of a lifetime.

  • Photo: Kayaks navigate through coral bloom off Maui

    South Shore, Maui

Photograph by Ron Dahlquist, My Shot

There is an incredible coral bloom off the village of Olowalu on Maui's south shore. I've seen the coral from a helicopter numerous times and always thought it would photograph beautifully, especially if I could arrange for some kayakers to be paddling in and around the coral to add scale to the scene.

  • Photo: Kayaker in a gorge drop on the Nooksack River in Washington.

    Nooksack River, Washington

Photograph by Rhys Logan, My Shot

Pro kayaker Fred Norquist drops into a gorge in the middle fork of the Nooksack River in Washington on June 10, 2011. I decided to set up for my shot on a single-lane bridge that overlooks the gorge from about a hundred feet up or so on a washed-out dirt road. Leaning out over the railing on the tiny steel truss bridge gave me quite a bit of vertigo as I followed Fred and two of his fellow pro friends, Sam Freihofer and Evan Garcia, down the gorge until they were out of sight.

  • Photo: Raft making a vertical drop at Summit creek falls in Washington.

    Summit Creek Falls, Washington

Photograph by Paul Thomson, My Shot

Dan McCain and Ben Sigler make the first successful raft descent of Skate Park Ramp at Summit Creek Falls in southwest Washington State. The falls is a 65-foot, near-vertical slide ending in a ramp that sent them flying for 20 or 30 feet across the pool at the bottom. I have been photographing Dan and Ben for a year now as they continue to redefine the boundries of whitewater rafting. This was their sixth first raft descent to date.

  • Photo: Dangerous area of rapids in the Grand Canyon

    Grand Canyon, Arizona

Photograph by Mike Orange, My Shot

Traveling down the Grand Canyon, we entered an area of dangerous rapids. Watching each raft as they tried to find the best angle of attack, we prepared our crew for the unexpected adventure downstream.

  • Photo: Kayaks in front of Mendenhall glacier in Alaska.

    Mendenhall Glacier, Alaska

Photograph by Thomas Curtain, My Shot

Growing up in southeast Alaska, I've had numerous opportunities for exploration and adventure. This was one particular occasion, early August of 2010, where much excitement was to be had. This is a shot of a friend from France and a local from Alaska kayaking in front of the calving ice face that constitutes the Mendenhall Glacier in Juneau, Alaska. About an hour after this photo was taken a certain photographer needed rescuing after ending up on the wet side of the kayak—thank God for dry bags.

  • Photo: Kayak in a river in India.

    India

Photograph by Marc Vanraes, My Shot

This photo was taken in India, where I followed a group of men who conquer the rivers in that country. This was one of the good photos that I took, I think.

    Bird Watching

Photograph by Kyle Pinjuv, My Shot

My friend and I were drifting apart as we watched and attempted to identify the birds in the area. I was taking pictures of the birds when I shot this picture to give to him later.

  • Photo: Rafting in the Grand Canyon in the evening.

    Grand Canyon, Arizona

    Photograph by Emilie Gooch,My Shot

Boating in the Grand Canyon, 2007. Every time we rounded a bend I felt like I had to reach for my camera to document the ridiculous beauty of it all. Eventually I realized I couldn't capture eveything with my lens, but I couldn't resist this particular shot. I can see this moment so clearly in my mind. I'm lucky to know what it feels like to take an evening float down the Grand. Lucky indeed.

  • Photo: Raft at Cataract canyon on the Colorado river

    Cataract Canyon, Utah

Photograph by Samuel Hays, My Shot

Cataract Canyon and the Colorado River offer some challenging whitewater rafting that the word "fun" does not aptly describe, as seen here.

  • Photo: Raft going down Money Drop Falls in Washington State.

    Money Drop Falls, Washington

Photograph by Paul Thomson, My Shot

The last shot in a sequence of Dan McCain running Money Drop Falls in Stevenson, Washington. This was the first successful raft run of this falls. The falls was created when a massive landslide tore through the area several years ago, transforming what was a small, nondescript trickle into this roaring spout.

    Korcula, Croatia

Photograph by Luka Tambaca, My Shot

This photo was taken during a two-month kayaking expedition in the waters by the island of Korcula in Croatia. Korcula is well known for its beautiful beaches and crystal-clear water. Moreover, according to some historians, Korcula is the birthplace of a famous merchant and explorer—Marco Polo.

  • Photo: Kayak racer over rapids at Great Falls in Maryland.

    Great Falls, Maryland

Photograph by Mel Sessa, My Shot

I attended a kayak race at Great Falls on the Maryland side in June 2011. The photo was taken as a kayaker plunged over a rapid into the raging water. I was standing on a bridge, and he was directly below me. I focused on the kayaker to get him in perfect focus as the water swirled around him. It was an exciting event to watch.
