New Paltz is an amazing town to explore but while in the area make sure to check the Highland walking bridge over the Hudson River that opened last month. An old railroad bridge across the river was converted into the world's longest walking bridge connecting Highland and Poughkeepsie.

Beautiful sights. Mountains, Rivers - what could be better?

I would definitely say that Guilded Otter has the best food in town, and the best beer!

Bistro, Bistro, Bistro! The Main Street Bistro is the best resturant in the area. It has an eclectic menu that is sure to please all palates. The burger and fries are amazing (my fav meal in the world!), but you can always get grilled chicken, avacado and sun dried tomatoes and sprouts (KC Sunshine)- also the prices are unbeatable. There is a wait on the weekends so get there early, get on the list and go check out the book stores, clothing store and poeple on mainstreet while you wait! Enjoy!

New Paltz is called home by many Triathletes and is the home of the Survival of the Shawangunks triathlon, an eight part wilderness adventure race that includes one cycling segment, four trail running segments, and three open water lake swims.

Don't forget the attraction of SUNY New Paltz, an excellent state school that attracts so many of those people who give the town its "non-Hamptons" feel!

Just went hiking in Lake Minnewaska this weekend, it was so beautiful!! It's great to see upstate New York being represented by your magazine because its majesty gets overlooked on occasion. Great piece!!

My name is Courtney. I was lucky enough to grow up in New Paltz! Being a New Paltzian I can tell you the perfect weekend. Book your stay at the Minnewaska Lodge. It is beautiful. Go to the Gilded Otter for a wonderful blueberry beer (Friday happy hour) then the Muddy Cup for a delicious latte and light music. Saturday during the day rock climb with one of the fantastic guides from EMS, have dinner at the Mountain Brauhaus (amazing German food) and Sunday pack up but visit a local winery.

Addicted to the Wallkill Rail Trail. Did 800 miles on it with my mountain bike this summer.

Glad to see National Geo Adventure convey some of the highlights of a wonderful town.

The Mohonk Preserve Visitor Center is a good starting point to find out about the preserve's many trails and carriage roads.

Also, check out Huguenot Street and explore the history of the French-speaking Huguenot refugees who first settled here in the later part of the 1600s. The street has seven stone houses from the early 1700s. A lovely street to walk, too!

And it was an absolutely wonderful place to go to college, back in the 70's...

New Paltz is a gem amongst destinations. In addition to the plethora of hiking, biking and outdoor activities the town also boasts a living coffee shop culture and live music can be found almost nightly. The area supports a rich artistic culture with many art galleries and a number of theater venues as well. New Paltz is also the birthing place of Chronogram magazine, a regional magazine loaded with interesting information about the area.

This is a great article and New Paltz is a great place. The 'nearby play areas' Mohonk Preserve Visitor Center and Minnewaska State Park Preserve are located in another Best Adventure Town, Gardiner, NY. In addition to climbing, hiking and biking, Gardiner is also the home of Blue Sky Ranch, a premier skydiving facility.
