Ask the townies about Hippie Hole Canyon. Its just south of Keystone off of 16. Also, make it an point to visit the Crazy Horse memorial and monument. It is already, if I'm not mistaken, the biggest sculpture in the world!

The all time best place to eat is actually about a 20 min drive from Rapid. The Alpine Inn. My husband and I moved there with the military from Germany and were pleased to find out that the woman that owns the Inn is german and she serves wonderful authentic german food during the day. The dinner menu is simple but so yummy.

You're right on about the Corn Exchange Restaurant......it is by far THE best place to eat in Rapid City........If you're in Custer, go the Sage Creek Grill.......

Good choice! I've been living in Rapid City for 19 years, and it's been a 19-year-adventure. I've backpacked the Badlands, hiked Harney Peak in the Black Hills and done just about everything in between. Still haven't seen everything.

Rapid City also has a huge mtn bike hiking park that the Larson Trust has developed (with trails laid out by IMBA) that was listed in Outside Magazine as one of the top trails in the US. For those who need easier biking, the Mickelson Trail runs 110 miles through the Black Hills (a premier Rail-to-Trail route with rock tunnels, ghost towns, and watering spots).

Great town! I attended the Black Hills Fat Tire Festival (bhfattirefestival.com) in Rapid City last year and had a ton of fun. Killer rides are all around the city and trails are barely used. They have a good brew pub too.
