The ash will not make the soil sterile. It will have the opposite effect-replenishment of soil nutrition. Crops will be greater than ever. Volcanic ash is laced with vital nutrients commonly depleated by modern farming techniques. Farmers that can plow or disc the ash into the soil will find this to be true very quickly. They were also blessed with rain. That is a great combination for jump starting the soil.
