Also, why did the fugitives steal a water truck? I think they did so that the law would come after them. Then they gun down one police officer and kill him and then seriuosly injure another. The chase is on blah blah blah and in the end the fugitives had one of four choices: 1. Surrender and face the death penalty and or prison for life, 2. Survive in the desert for the rest of their lives, 3. Go out in a hail of bullets with the law, or 4. Kill themselves rather than face the consequences.

The article states that the police and the FBI thought the fugitives were planning something big, such as a robbery or maybe blowing up a building, taking hostages etc. They came up with all these theories as to why the fugitives had all those weapons, ammunition, hidden bunkers full of survival gear etc. The police and FBI assumed they were paramilitary anti-government types and were preparing for the Apocolypse. I think they set all of this into motion themselves and then committed suicide.

I was trying to pass through Bluff right after the murder and what a scene it was. Cop cars, choppers and national media, all not really having any idea what was going on. This article clears up everthing.
