I worked in Yellowstone for three summers (93-Lake, 95-Lake, 96-OFI). You don't have to do a big overnight hike to enjoy the park. There are plenty of day hikes to enjoy. Just get out of your car and enjoy. I like to recommend the hike to Fairy Falls. It is mostly flat and a good 1/2 day hike to a beautiful site for a picnic. Walk just past to see some thermals without the boardwalks getting in the way. You will also walk right past the Grand Prismatic Spring.
