Many find modern Inca Trail tours to be overcrowded and maintain that the density of 'adventurers' detracts from the actual experience. Im my own experience I have found that finding the right tour guide or outfitter can really affect how good a time you have. If you want the wilderness factor, find a tour guide that likes hiking super early or super late.

I would like to remind readers that rapid ascend can lead to altitude sickness. Taking diamox (usually 125mg twice daily) can help prevent complications.

Also beware of sandflies (leishmaniasis) and wear long pants and sleeves especially if you are birding.

This five-day adventure is a trekker's delight. Salkantay is a trekking experience never to be forgotten. The trek traverses high passes with dramatic high mountain views. The trek's highest point passes so close to this majestic peak that its avalanches and glaciers had be both heard and seen breaking away. The route then descends, through Andean communities and the wide array of flora and fauna found in the cloud forest.
