a great shoe for the money
I purchased these after having had a pair of Altitude Hiking boots which are an over the ankle version of this shoe. I have a medium width foot and these are very comfortable shoes. They are completely waterproof and the tread pattern of the soles provides excellent traction on wet or snowy surfaces. A great deal for the price, and they look good too.
Just What I Wanted
This is my second pair (actually my first pair was the Altitude II which they no longer make). The first pair lasted more than 3 years of almost everyday wear. I think they look better than any other light hiker to wear to the office and provide just what I need when I go out into the field.
real solid low hiking shoe with great support.
I looked quite a while for a low shoe with real solid support. This is it. I don't know what the midsole is, but the metal shank does the job of providing a lot of stiffness and support, which I want in a hiking shoe. Hi Tec's fabric-skinned low hiking shoes have gotten softer than they used to be, so I had to spend more and get this one. It seems to be just a lower version of Hi Tec's waterproof leather boot. The leather looks real durable so I expect it will last me a while. With just 4 hooks for laces, and fairly stiff leather upper, it can be tricky to get it just the right degree of tightness. So I adjust as your walk goes on. Considering how solid the shoe is, it's nice and light weight. Decent quality leather makes it OK looking for us folks in the Western US who wear boots for office and teaching jobs. Haven't been out in a major rain with it yet.
Very good 4.5
I purchased these shoe to fill the gap between a work boot and an athletic shoe. I'm a die hard Red Wing guy, but when doing light duty stuff and you need something beefier then a tennis shoe these fit the bill. They have handle evrything form scampering around on a 7/12 roof all day to shoveling the drive in 4 inches of snow for a couple of hours. Being more shoe like you don't mind wearing them around town either.
