Surprised at the warmth
I was looking at the Marmot Baffin, the MH compressor, patagonia nano and a host of other jackets that can be used under a shell. I settled on the Cauldron because it would zip in to my Marmot Palisades jacket and the cauldron is not shiny. I am blown away at how warm the Cauldron with the Palisades is. I went for a 2 mile hike in 6degree weather with a -7wind chill wearing a cotton t-shirt and a polo underneath. I was sweating by the time I was done. The cauldron by itself is nicely finished and appears to made with durable materials. While wearing a sweatshirt I tested out the Cauldron by itself on a 12 degree day and I was comfortable all day while running errands. Marmot uses small sewn slits at the ends of the sleeves for shell snaps to go through. I like this much better than having a tab sewn onto the jacket. The inner material feels good against the skin and fleece slides in easily. This jacket is not really puffy but it does have some loft to it. I am 5'7 and stocky and the jacket fits fine across my wide shoulders. The ONLY complaint I have is the inside material will slide out under the cuffs when you put the jacket on. I simply tuck it back in and it stays in place. I wore the cauldron under my Palisades all day skiing and I was not cold once. Opening the pit zips on my shell dumped any extra heat after a run and I zipped up on the chair lift. For warmth, wind resistance, zip in compatibility, and a not shiny jacket I recommend the cauldron. As a bonus, the jacket went on sale after i purchased it. The rep I called realized what I wanted before I really asked and offered to credit me back the difference.

Marmot Cauldron Jacket
This is an excellent option to a down jacket/sweater. I'm 6 ft, 195 and the fit is perfect. Not too snug or loose. Quality is classic MArmot. Arm length is on spec (I wear 35 sleeves) and length is just below waist, so fits well under a shell with powder skirt. The warmth factor is surprisingly good - I was expecting less but it is on par with my 800 fill down sweater. The collar is just enough in thickness and not at all bulky, so it fits nicely under my shell. I have the Ocean/surf and the color is exactly as you'll see on the Altrec site. It is not "shiny" like you see with many synthetic and down sweater jackets. Very pleases with it as a medium/heavy synthetic fill layer or plain jacket.

Very warm and comfy
I'm a fan of Marmot gear and will be going skiing this winter so of course I had to buy a new Marmot jacket! I was going to go with the Zues, but after talking with Marmot I ended up getting the Cauldron. I can't believe how lightweight and warm this jacket is. I wore it last night outside with just a t-shirt on a windy, cold night (around 30 degrees) and felt great. Also the angel wing movement makes it very comfortable to wear. The only downside to the jacket is it isn't all that great looking. I get comments all the time when I wear my Gravity softshell out, but this jacket isn't going to win any fashion awards.

First off, durability rating is only a guess since I just got the jacket recently. Jacket appearance, fit and quality are excellent. I tried TNF equivalent on (red point) at a local store. This jacket is better in my opinion on all counts (and less money). Fits great as a mid layer (and much better than a fleece) and the jacket has such a good look that it is no problem wearing it as a light outer jacket. Some jackets in this catagory just look goofy and / or have a shiny finish. Not this one. Altrec service was great. Jacket order was entered promptly, left right away, and came to me when it was supposed to (and fairly quickly considering I am on the east coast).

Quality Insulation Piece
Very impressed with the warmth, weight and compact-ability of the jacket. I'd easily recommend to others.
