These pants are essentially a goretex shell, thats why they are cheaper than the other styles. Layering underneath is necessary for cold weather. They are extremely waterproof and the construction is excellent. I love the super reinforced hems on the back of the legs so that they wont rip if you walk on them. The description usually says no Recco, but these pants definitely have it on the left leg. I sort of miss having cargo pockets but I have learned to live without them. The Zip-tech interface is also quite nice, it works perfectly with my Volcom coat, and is much easier to work than my previous burton zip set up. They fit a little smaller than other brands I have worn but are just about perfect for me. This is my first experience with Volcom outerwear and I am very impressed with the quality so far. I have used them for riding at resorts and feel comfortable taking them into the backcountry.
